Module 3
Three weeks into this class and about eight chapters into the book, I think I might have to invest in buying the book and not returning the rental. There is no much useful information and when reading the content, it does not seem like your just reading a textbook. I am able to connect with almost everything I have read so far in this book and am really enjoying learning about how I can become an impactful teacher using the knowledge I have been reading about.
With that being said Chapter 7 talks about the behavioral issues and using reinforcers vs. punishments. I know with my little student's reinforcers do work a lot better than punishments. We are actually not even allowed to give the students "time-outs" in my place of work. If a child is acting out or causes a disruption in the class, we just have to offer a better choice than what they are doing. I know on page 273 it talks about the Premack Principle (David Premack 1965) which is other words is known as Grandma's Rule. I use this all the time in my classroom with the little ones, if you sit nicely on the carpet for me then we can all go outside and play. I also use the token reinforcement system which is on page 278. This is used more in the three and four-year-old classrooms. Each classroom has a green, red, and yellow spotlight with the student's names on a clip. All the students start on the green light, if they misbehave they get moved down to yellow and then to red if needed. If the student stays on green all week long, on Fridays they get to pick a toy out of the treasure chest to take home. With older students, high schoolers, I would be more into goal-setting and self-management which is on page 287. Having the students monitoring and evaluating their own progress especially in a physical education environment is very important to me as a teacher.
Chapter 13 was more about classroom management which is also very important in a physical education class. They talk about having more time for learning and with physical education, you do have to use all the time you have and make sure the students are active throughout the whole class period. I liked how the chapter talked about management mean relationships. If you have a good relationship with all your students and respect them, they will be less likely to try and act out and disrespect you as the teacher. Routine and procedures are another things I connected with in this chapter, especially in my toddler and two-three-year-old rooms. It is very important to keep them on a regular routine so they know what to expect and when to expect it and it helps keep everyone on the same track.

I too agree that this text is worth keeping! So much of the information seems relatable and useful for teaching and overcoming challenges that might come up in our careers. I wish I had more time to really let the information "soak in", so owning it would help down the road. My younger kids all did the red light/yellow light/green light in preschool, as they grew older the systems changed slightly. I think you are right about stressing the importance of relationships and fun with students enabling better classroom management.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the text book has a lot of great information my only problem with keeping the books is that they constantly find new information to replace the old information. I like the better choice instead of the punishments option at your work. Often punishment is the first solution people think of when trying to correct a behavior. Having a good relationship with your students and mutual respect is important as you stated. I do not understand how someone could teach without having the respect of their students.
