Module 3
Chapter seven covered behavioral views of learning. This is how classical condition can be applied to the classroom setting. In the chapter they discussed how behaviors can be changed about the learning process, by using rewards and punishments. I think the most beneficial part of chapter seven for me was how to handle undesirable behavior within in a classroom. This is because I had no idea how to handle a student who is acting out. Do I punish them or do I talk to them calmly? On pg. 281 Woolfolk says that punishment in a classroom "just doesn't work". This is because it tells students to stop doing the negative action, even though they know what they did wrong. Instead we should show or tell them what to do next time, which really surprised me. Another part of chapter seven which really drew my attention was the use of positive and negative reinforcement. I will probably use presentation punishment (pg. 268) by giving the student a detention if the behavior continues, but that is what will be my final chance. Overall I will try to talk to the student to see why they are behaving the way they are. The table on page 270 is great because it provides different examples on reinforcements and how to respond to them.
Chapter thirteen was all about classroom management. I think the most effective thing for this is to Gain Their Cooperation, because if they are willing to work with you then the lessons will go smoothly. By doing this it will create a positive learning environment. This is the foundation of what makes a classroom a community. If there isn't a good sense of positivism, then the students will be against trying to cooperate with you and the whole lesson could go under quick. Relating to the previous chapters I feel that we should have our students get know each other, and us get to know them. This worked well when I was in my field placement at a junior high. This students all knew each other and the teacher very well. There was a great level of respect among each other and the classroom management was amazing. Something that I will try to implement into my classroom is the Rules for Secondary School on page 516. It is great because they are rules that could help set a could sense of order within the classroom. I didn't think to implement rules like this in my classroom, but I really enjoyed what they had to do with maintaining good classroom management.
A section that should be covered in PD should be the bullying section, specifically table 13.3. This is because there are different forms of bullying that take place and some teachers might not even know it. I didn't even know there were specific types of bullying that went this in depth. Then on page 534 there is table 13.4 which gives possible reasons for bullying and how to act upon them. This is a better way to help the student see what they are doing wrong instead of just punishing them and making them more angry, which could lead to more bullying.

ReplyDeleteI liked that you mentioned you try to talk with your students to see why they behave how they do. I think even if we use presentation punishment at times, it is important that they understand what the expectation and the consequence is ahead of time and it gives us a foundation to reason with them. I have found that at times even demonstrating mercy and giving warnings goes a long way in gaining their respect. I also liked the bullying section and table 13.3, it was extremely informative.
