Teacher Interview
So I interviewed a good friend Aimee that I went to high school with. I know we were supposed to look for a teacher with at least 5 years experience, but she only has 2 years. She had subbed for a couple of years previous to that. I feel her having less then 5 years experience is more helpful for us as new teachers. The idea of being a new teacher is still fresh in her mind. Part of the interview reminded me of the section of Special Problems with High School Students in chapter 13. It talks about how many secondary students never complete their homework. "The most important thing is to enforce the established consequences for incomplete work" (pg. 536). Aimee reminds students how important the it is to make sure they do their homework. She even told me that they get credit for doing the work whether it is correct or not. When I asked her about classroom setup she told me that she does not have many options because she is in a small room. She does do one thing that was mentioned in this section about students who break the rules. "Seat these students away from others who might be influenced by them" (pg. 536). Just like on page 512 Aimee also talks about you need to have a good relationship with your students. She said to make sure you do not make yourself look like a friend to the point the students will not respect you and listen to you with rules, but you need to care. "When students feel caring and support from their teachers and their peers, they are more likely to cooperate with classroom activities" (pg. 512). This also part of making sure the student feels safe in the classroom. She also talks about how you will need routines and procedures along with rules. and all these have to be consistent among all students and actions.
I feel reading chapter 13 and doing the interview with Aimee that I have learned a lot of things that will be useful for me in the classroom. I honestly think that classroom management is the most important thing to know and learn as a teacher. It is also the hardest to learn and master. Aimee said even with just being in the classroom for two years she is learning new things that will help her classroom management. She tries new things to see if that works and understands that it is an ongoing practice. I also feel that even if I am teaching 25 years from now that it will still be something that I will have to adapt and adjust to constantly.
