Module 1

Chapter 1-3

Chapter one: Learning, Teaching and Educational Psychology.

Chapter one started with learning and teaching today and what are classrooms look like. It covered diversity topics and how our future classes majority will be foreign born. Although most of our classes are diverse, however the teachers are not diverse. The percentage of White teachers is increasing. Having diverse teachers would be beneficial, however the percentage of African American teachers is declining. It would be great to have teachers from different backgrounds, as it is important for students to see people who look like in different positions. Another thing that stood out to me is how teachers can make a tremendous difference in students success. Different studies showed how teachers can have so much power over students lives. I personally agree with this myself. There were so many teachers that were the reason why I succeeded and they played a great role in my academic success and there were the opposite of course. I believe that teachers have an influencing platform and they need to use it wisely. I hope to be a positive influencer on my future students, as I would love to do what it takes to help them succeed.

Chapter two was about Cognitive Development. It started with describing different kinds of developments. Physical development the changes in the body. The Personal development changes in individuals personality. Social development which is the changes in the way an individual relates to others. And last but not least, Cognitive development which the changes in thinking. It then covers the topic about what influences these developments, nature verses nurture. When I work with children, I try to see if nature or nurture is dominant based on their developments. I constantly found that they both intertwine in some way.

Chapter three was about the self, social and moral development. This chapter covered many interesting topics, such as family affects on students, how divorce effect students, peer relationships, different types of aggression, and child abuse. The above topics are all major factors in every students lives. Our job as educators to be aware of all changes our students might be experiencing since it could have a dramatic effect on the students academics. Unfortunately, many teachers do not care about what their student might be experiencing outside of class, and all they worry about is that they test high on their tests so they can get the bonus check. It saddens me when I see teachers that have equal expectations from all students, despite the struggles that they might be going through that is effecting their performance. I believe outside incidents that students might go through should be taken under consideration.

  1. Hi Wafa,
Great overview of chapters 1-3! Diversity in the classroom is one of the most important concepts in educations. Students come from diverse backgrounds and it is very important for them not only to have a window, but also, a mirror. You mentioned that chapter one discusses the percentage of white teachers increasing and African American teachers decreasing. It is important for youth to see educators that not only look similar to them, but who also share similar cultures. Caucasian students have this experience often, while students of various other cultures do not. The adverse is true when it comes to experiencing educators of differing cultures, it is just as beneficial to experience a teacher with a different culture.

Your comment about teachers who focus on test scores above the student, as an individual, is right on target. It also saddens me that state testing has become a means for an extra paycheck and state funding. A lot of educators "teach to the test." This type of education does not benefit the student. To successfully educate the student, the teacher must view the student in their entirety, as a human with complex thoughts and emotions.

    Thank you for sharing! :)

  2. Hey Wafa,

Your chapter 1-3 outline was great! Diversity is a big issue in some schools. Not all teachers are excepting and some want to learn more. It's very important for schools to be diverse students look for teachers like them. For example when I was in high school that was the first time I have ever seen a hijabi teacher. It literally felt so unreal to me. I had someone that looked like me and became my teacher. The reason I thought that is because their are a lot of schools as you mentioned decreasing in diversity. To be honest that moment is when I knew I was going to make it as becoming a teacher.
