Module 2
The first topics were covering the advantages and disadvantages of labeling. There are so many labeling and classification in the education field. It is almost impossible to have a classroom without having to have different labels for different students. The purpose of diagnosing and labeling is to help have a learning plan for students, on the other hand I find it dehumanizing in some places.
Chapter four covers so many topics and has information on students with disabilities. It shows different approaches for different disorders. It reminded me of my observation hours that I had done for my Education for Children with Special needs class. I remember how each student with different disability were provided with learning tools and help they needed based on severity of their need for help.
Language was covered by chapter five, where the light was shed mainly on language diversity and educating students from different backgrounds. As an ESL major, I found this chapter very helpful. Especially that I came from a diverse background myself and at that point teachers were not familiar with any strategies to use with students that speak a second language. Having to live this situation motivated me to major in ESL, to help those students succeed and not feel alienated. Teachers assumed I had a disability when I couldn’t comprehend my homework. They failed to figure out that I had a language barrier instead.
Chapter six focused more on culture and diversity, such as the influence of socioeconomic status of students, ethnicity, and even gender. Our classrooms today are very diverse, therefore it is very important for teachers to acknowledge this kind of information as it makes a big difference in students lives. I've learned that in some cultures talking a lot is disrespectful, while not participating in class might be considered a delay. Therefore, knowing that it's a culture thing will demand different approach than a learning delay.
Chapter eight focuses on cognitive views of learning. Understanding cognition is very important as a future teacher, it helped me understand the memory and types of memory that the brain uses. It also explains many ways for teachers to use different strategies to help teachers be successful in their classrooms.
Great overall view on the module chapters, I through this class I feel like you and I have major things in common. Especially the language situations. I too was in that situation with the teachers thinking I had a learning disability because of the second language I spoke. Now teachers are very familiar with diversity and now know the language barriers.
