Module 4 , Ch. 9,10 &11
This weeks reading delved more into cognitive processes. It explained the role of metacognition and how critical thinking works using three kinds of knowledge: declarative, procedural and self-regulatory. I found it fascinating to see how someone uses all three skills planning, monitoring and evaluating which we do naturally but it is a learned skill. (pg341) It explained how development, maturity, learning experiences and even biology can alter abilities. (341) I loved the chart on learning strategies and see many of them explained and how they help develop metacognitive skills. (345) I work using ESL strategies to teach students and was interested in learning of the importance of accessing background knowledge and using visuals (3470. I found the problem-solving section informative and providing supports such as vocabulary and focus on what is pertinent is also used in sheltered instruction so the section titled "Defining goals and Representing the Problem," was very helpful. In my practice, I find that when we do not provide help in these areas the ELL's usually get lost in the process and not perform to their utmost potential.
Chapter ten focused on constructivism and preparing and using the physical space, environment, resources, and information to develop understanding and knowledge. (383). We learned about using strategies and shifting responsibility (398) as well as using collaborative structures(399) I usually push in during guided reading and use group work to perform guided reading, therefore it was important to learn more about how to use these structures and promote equal participation(403-408)
I also found the table 10.6 useful to foresee dilemmas and self-analytical questions that can help. (409).
Finally, chapter 11 focused on social cognitive views and motivation. It was interesting to see how behavior is connected to personal and environmental factors. As educators this information provides a window to consider while learning about our students' background (428) I found table 11.1about the factors that affect observational learning, discussing the concept of modeling. I personally found it meaningful because I have learned to use modeling as a tool to teach behavior, questioning thought the process and much more, in my instruction, and have found that students respond well to this strategy. I found the information very valuable for my teaching and table 11.3 about the four views of learning connecting the theorists to their views on educational key points was enlightening (455). Finally, the part that discusses knowledge, volition and motivation gave me additional ammunition to ponder this week as I had to write about intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivation and this was about what influences self-regulation (440-441)

I too thought that it was great reading about all of the ways to help the students grow to their full potential. There were many practical points that seemed useful and I think it is good to use your experience with students, especially ELLs to relate to all of this information. Someone mentioned earlier how they want to keep this text for future use as a teacher and I do too since it contains the science about thinking, learning and also the practical strategies for teaching and motivating students.
