Module 4
There was a lot of information that we read about. Of course, they are all closely related to
each other. The first chapter focuses on
Metacognition and learning strategies. I
did not know much metacognition before this week’s reading. The one thing I did learned was how metacognition
is broken down into declarative knowledge, procedural knowledge, and self-regulatory
knowledge. Like everything else we have
learned metacognition is different among different people. There are many factors that lead to these
differences. Two of them are based on
age and maturation. The chapter also
talks about how teachers can develop metacognition by using KWL for younger
students and to add more metacognitive questions for high school and college
students. Learning strategies is when the
chapter introduces us to visual tools like concept mapping. The learning strategy I did like to read was
the reading strategies. I have not always
been the strongest reader and I think if I was taught the READS strategy then reading
not only would have been easier, but maybe more fun for me. Next Woolfolk discusses Problem solving. Woolfolk (2019) states problem solving is usually
defined as formulating new answers, going beyond the simple application of
previously learned rules to achieve a goal (p. 352). I think problem solving will be a strategy I will
teach in my classroom because I think it will be useful in the business
world. I say this because questions in
the business world doe not always have simple answers and application.
Chapter 10 discusses the theory of constructivism. Of course, that is the view of an active role
of the learner in understanding of the information. I think this will be a theory I will try to teach
and implement in my class. I feel constructivism
will be effective in a business class especially social constructivism because
I plan on doing many group projects that gives the students real life
experience in the classroom. I think I
will use external direction mostly with a little internal direction to
construct knowledge. The biggest
challenge will be providing a constructivism environment. To setup that environment you need to assume
you must elicit students’ ideas and experiences in relation to key topics,
provide students with a variety of sources, and encourage students reflective
and autonomous thinking. Problem based
learning will be successful in my classroom because of the group work of real world
ill-structured problems.
Chapter 11 talks about Cognitive views and motivation. The beginning of chapter again discusses
social cognitive theory and the key elements observational learning and self-efficacy. Modeling is key to observational
learning. To make this successful you
must make sure the development level of the observer makes a difference in the
learning also by watching others who are similar to us, we learn about what behaviors
are appropriate. Self-efficacy are the
beliefs we hold about our own capabilities.
I feel that this week’s reading will be effective in my
classroom and if I follow the proper techniques then these theories will be
successful and the students in turn will be successful.
