Module 4
This weeks reading was on Chapters 9, 10 and 11. Since we all did the concept map on chapter nine and have some discussions on that in Moodle, I figured I would talk more about chapters ten and eleven. Chapter ten was about constructivist theories and principles and how to incorporate collaboration and cooperative learning in your future classrooms. It also dug deep into creating constructivist learning environments, which included everything from assignments, assessments, and activities that are done in class. I think with physical education and health I can really use scaffolding to facilitate this problem-based learning. I also think that physical education has a big role in collaboration and group work since there is a lot of team play that goes on within the class. They will also learn and have individual accountability for their part on the team. The chapter also takes about some things that can go wrong while working in groups. The biggest thing I would say is getting all the students to equally participate. Creating "good groups" that have a mixture of personality and abilities is also key to having a successful lesson with groups. I really like the idea of the flipped classroom (pg.418), this way I can have the students watch the video on how to do or play a certain activity before class the following day, thus giving the students more time to be active and less time wasted on instruction.
Moving onto chapter eleven. This chapter covers the social cognitive theory, modeling, self-efficacy, and self-regulated learning. I think this chapter really hit home with me because I did not have anyone that really looked up to or anyone that believed in me, so I never really believed in myself about anything. The biggest thing for me is modeling, especially if I am a health and physical education major. Student notices everything you do, even outside of the classroom. I cannot be teaching my students about healthy eating habits, and then run into one of them at Mcdonald. I cannot be coming into school everyday with candy and energy drinks as my snacks. I have to make sure that I am being the best role model that I can be for these students. I also have to be able to build the student self-efficacy and make sure that they know they can do anything and be their own hero in their own story, accomplishing all the little goals to achieve that one big goal.
