Module 5

This week we read chapters 12, 14 and 15.  I think these chapters were my favorite to read because I feel like I took a lot away from them.  They covered student's motivation, guidance for how we can teach every student and classroom assessments, grading and standardized tests.

Chapter 12 focused on students motivation for learning as well as Maslow's Hierarchy of needs and how these affect student's drive to learn.  I learned great tips to help students who don't have the intrinsic motivation to work and how we sway between intrinsic and extrinsic motivations.  It talked about mastery goals and performance goals and students characteristics of both, which I found really interesting!  I also found the section about student's thoughts about their self-worth and the types of students they are based on these equally interesting.  Reading it I was able to think of students I have worked with or peers who possessed some of these and so it was great to have psychological reasoning behind their actions and beliefs.  As teachers, we will see students with all levels of self-worth and self-efficacies so it's so helpful to have the knowledge of how to help students with low levels raise them and continue to support all students.

Chapter 14 was called "Teaching Every Student" and as a future teacher, I felt like it had really touched on some of the anxieties that I already have.  These include how to be an expert or exemplary teacher, and the biggest take away is to always be reflective of your teaching.  It also briefly mentioned how as beginning teachers we just don't have the knowledge and experience that expert teachers have (obviously) so that felt reassuring that I don't need to walk in on day 1 with the weight on my shoulder that I should be on the same level as a veteran teacher.  This chapter touched on various subjects from seatwork and how homework has no value to a guide to planning efficiently.  There was so much information to support new teachers!

Chapter 15 was all about assessments and testing and briefly brought me back to my statistics class.  This was also the chapter that connected with the test analysis assignment that we are in the process of doing as our final project for our portfolio.  There was so much information in this chapter as well as how to construct tests.  It was a little overwhelming but all great information to have as an future educator!
